Pilates Center Of Austin Awesome Staff

It goes without saying, but we will anyway... Your Pilates instruction is only as good as your Instructor. And the Certified Teachers at the PCA are…Awesome! We keep hearing it over and over:

"Your Teachers are the most knowledgeable we've seen anywhere."

"I've never been with a teacher who is so tuned into my personal needs and goals."

"I've now worked with 3 of your Instructors…and they're all so in sync with my special needs."

And that's just the tip of the iceberg! Thanks to Marcos, our Senior Staff Teacher, and all our Core Teaching Staff, Jae Hoon, Ivy, Melody, and Gaye for being the most inspiring, empowering and fun staff on Planet Pilates!

And, of course, it doesn't stop there. Because we just couldn't shine like this if it weren't for Beth, our Front Desk Manager Extraordinaire, taking care of you from the moment you first call us...through your initial registration...and, ongoingly, as you progress through your training with us.

And, finally, the two of us, Wendy, your Director of Education and Master Teacher…and Michael, your Director of Operations and Story-Teller in Residence, now in our 22nd year with the Pilates Center of Austin (and 29 years together as each other's cheerleaders in life and partners in both marriage and family business). We're just so grateful to be engaged in this work, exploring the possibility of living our best possible life.

I have spent the last 20 years of my work life immersed in the world of Pilates. These 2 decades, along with 35 prior years of circuitous journeys into the world of the creative arts, holistic health and fitness, personal and business transformation, leadership development, manufacture and marketing have given me access to an undeniable truth that I have seen manifest itself countless times: that anything is possible when we allow ourselves to dream, and, then, to anchor that dream to an unflinching resolve and commitment.

This awareness, this permission to dream, has given me so much more than pursuing the traditional, expected trajectory of an MBA grad, freshly launched out of Tulane University in 1971. ...continues

Why do I love teaching Pilates?  It is amazing, inspiring and a blessing to me to see the life-changing work Pilates brings to each of my clients not only in their workouts but also in the practice of life. One aspect I have learned to teach and live by while being mentored by Wendy is that the clients are the experts in what their bodies need as well as what they desire in reaching their fitness goals. When clients grab hold of that, transformation happens!!  Their bodies and their life habits change, which empowers them to see what they have never experienced before—that we are our best coaches/trainers as we listen to ourselves instead of what we are told we are "supposed" to look like.

“Meet the client where they are.” This was one of the tenets that informs my Pilates practice. Our bodies are constantly changing moment to moment, day to day, experience to experience. When I am with a client I try to help them access their own awareness and tap into the intelligence that their bodies already possess. I like to think of myself as a Pilates facilitator rather than a teacher. My own journey with my body has profoundly changed my relationship to the work that I do. When I began teaching in 2005 I was young, strong and able bodied, and as the years pass I’ve ridden my own waves of change and abilities. The empathy that I have tried to cultivate for myself most definitely informs my relationships with the people I am lucky enough to help.

My academic study of movement began in 1998 through a physical therapist assistant perspective. Over the years of studying Personal Training, Group Fitness, Pilates, Yoga, etc., I obtained many perspectives of movement. I began my journey with Wendy 5 years ago and found a bridge and clarity for all these perspectives. Most importantly, I rediscovered myself through movement! My whole life transformed from our work together. The passion and drive that erupted continues to flow in my life and my teaching. I'm inspired to move from a whole embodied, self-healing perspective and even more inspired watching this unfold in my clients’ sessions and their lives.

Gaye McElwain

Gaye began dancing early in life and enjoyed a wonderful career as a professional dancer. It was the dance community that introduced her to Pilates. When she began her Pilates certification, she realized that she had the opportunity to learn from the best, Wendy LeBlanc-Arbuckle. She first viewed Pilates from the perspective of a performing artist and athlete, but a cancer diagnosis taught her that Pilates can bring every person, regardless of physical ability, to a place of renewal and vitality. When Gaye isn't teaching Pilates, she works as a communications professional and spends time with her family and friends. She is grateful for travel, good food, her loving husband, and for each new day.

Hey there, does anybody have a ball…a balloon…a frisbee…or better yet anybody ready to throw on?. Oh, yeah, my name is Kyaa, I'm a Basenji mix, and the only thing I love more than balls and balloons is…hmmm, let's see…oh yeah - you Guys! I love to greet you at the door and, sometimes, even join you for a workout session – I do a great "downward dog"! I don't let it go to my head, but everyone I meet just wants to take me home with them. We'll, I already have a pretty super "forever family," but...all of you who come to the PCA are a pretty fabulous extended family! My tail's waggin' just thinking about the next time you'll be here…now where's that tennis ball…

Wendy LeBlanc-Arbuckle

Over the next eight years, she directed the East/West Center of Louisiana, In New Orleans, her hometown. In the mid through the late 1980's, Wendy participated extensively in Landmark Education's Leadership Development Program, for two years as an Introductory Seminar Leader. In 1989, she and her husband, Michael, and three other partners from the U.S, Canada and Switzerland, founded NOVA Institute, an international holistic school for the healing arts in Estes Park, Colorado.

And then came Pilates …
From there it was all downhill—literally. Because it was during the development of the NOVA venture that she met Rachel Segal and Amy Alpers in Boulder, a 40-mile trek down the mountain. From that point on, her life took on a decidedly expanded direction–lightning had hit, the train had left the station, there was no turning back. She was in one of the first Certification Programs at the Pilates Center of Boulder, heading down the mountain two or three times a week!

Needless to say, this was, for Wendy, divinely inspired, as Romana Kryzanowska and her protégé Steve Giordano were delivering Boulder's Certification Course in the early years. She and Michael moved on from NOVA in the coming year, and she devoted herself almost exclusively to her Pilates training. In 1993, after receiving her Pilates Certification, she, moved to Austin, Texas, which she now calls home, and founded the Pilates Center of Austin.

Over the years since, she studied further with Romana Kryzanowska at Drago's Gym in New York and additionally with other first-generation Pilates Elders, particularly with longtime friends and treasured mentors Mary Bowen, Kathleen Stanford Grant, Ron Fletcher, Lolita San Miguel and second-generation teacher Alan Herdman.

The road goes on forever…
Her ongoing yoga and Pilates practice, along with intensive studies with Judith Aston, Bonnie Bainbridge-Cohen, Emilie Conrad, Susan Harper, Hubert Godard, The Guild for Structural Integration, Tom Myers and Phillip Beach and Jaap van der Wal, with profound breath, fascial and ontological studies, helped Wendy develop her own “biointelligent” voice. Her vision has been to illuminate the universal core principles that underlie all great bodymind practices, enabling students and practitioners of any discipline to discover their wholeness through cultivating their own voice, through the portal and brilliant guidance of their biointelligent wisdom.

This embodied study opens us to a deeper inquiry into "Core as Relationship: with gravity, ourselves, one another and our environment." It is this journey that has profoundly influenced the development of her dynamic 3Core Connections® Embodied Perspective. This illuminating perspective, which forms the foundation of the PCA's Continuing Education Programs, is an experiential mapping of the body’s interrelated Lower, Central and Upper Cores, awakening the innate biotensegrity of the feet, legs, hands, arms and head to the primordial breathing spine!

It provides an access for teachers to analyze and enhance any movement, seeing beyond an exercise to the essence of what each person needs. This vision gives Wendy a unique voice in the Pilates community, along with cultivating the potency of each person's voice and vision to be self-healing, self-discovering, and self-actualizing with a greater purpose.

* The Pilates Center of Austin, along with Wendy and her husband, Michael Arbuckle, were participants in the federal trademark infringement action (with Balanced Body and Deborah Lessen) for use of the "Pilates" name. Wendy is a founding member of the Pilates Method Alliance and The Fascia Research Society, and was on the original role delineation committee for the creation of the PMA Pilates Certification Exam, a third-party credentialing exam for Pilates professionals. Wendy is a second generation PMA-CPT, a presenter for Pilates Anytime and FusionPilatesEDU, and honored to be a Mentor in Balanced Body’s Passing the Torch Mentoring Program.

Michael Arbuckle...continues

Not to say it hasn't been challenging, daunting, even overwhelming, at times. But, as anyone who knows Wendy and/or me, will attest… it's also been full of magic and miracles that far outweigh the rocky roads.

The result, thus far, has been some incredible adventures…businesses that have been great successes…and a few noteworthy failures. Before co-founding the Pilates Center of Austin with Wendy in 1993, I have had the privilege to serve as a community organizer for the Office of Economic Opportunity in the early '70s in New Orleans …open and run my own critically acclaimed wood art gallery through the 70"s and 80's. . . found and co-direct for 5 years, the Macrobiotic Center of Louisiana with Wendy . . . run leadership development seminars for Landmark Education in the latter 1980's . . . and co-found and serve, in the early 90's, as Executive Director of NOVA Institute, an international holistic retreat, resort and school for the healing arts in Colorado .

All of which led us here to Austin and, in 1993, the creation of the PCA , which is now in its 20th "triumphant" year ( and I do not use that term lightly, for it has triumphed, having survived certification training spilling over into the kitchen and ultimately the entire house on Zennia Street; multiple floods at the Guadalupe facility, and countless other myths and miracles that are now an inseparable part of Pilates folklore. Shortly, thereafter, in the summer of 1994, I created Dynamic Fitness Systems, a Pilates' equipment manufacturing company here in Austin . . . and, then, in 1998, on the heels of a fire which destroyed the DFS manufacturing facility in Austin, co-created Peak Pilates (which I sold to my partner in late 2003), a major international provider of Pilates' equipment and education.

We've been at this long enough to put much of the roller coaster ride of keeping two major business endeavors behind us. There are still enough twists and twirls to keep the game exciting, but without the hairpin turns and 90 mile an hour mad dashes to the finish.

I want to wrap up my brief travelogue here by saying what a profound privilege it has been, and continues to be, to carry on our lives' vision at this Center - a place where staff, teachers and clients share a commitment to engage in a lifelong personal and collective inquiry into the heart of living, playing and working together to create extraordinary lives…filled with purpose, passion and vitality.
