Austin's First Pilates Studio Started

in a Living Room

Wendy LeBlanc-Arbuckle and Michael Arbuckle opened The Pilates Center of Austin in 1993. Thirty three years later, we're still here.

You're Two Steps From Joe Pilates Himself

In 1993, Wendy earned her certification under Romana Kryzanowska, one of Joe Pilates' original protégés and the person most responsible for carrying his method forward after his death. She came home to Austin and started teaching out of the family room of their house on Zennia Street.

That was the first Pilates studio in Austin.

When Michael set out to build the equipment Wendy needed, Romana welcomed him in and gave him the specifications for Joe's original apparatus. So the machines were right too. His convertible Reformer and Half Cadillac design was never patented, and every major equipment company builds a version of it today.

Every teacher who has taught at the PCA traces their training back through Wendy to Romana, and through Romana to Joe. That lineage is still how we teach, and it's the reason a class here doesn't feel like a class anywhere else.

Our Mission

At the Pilates Center of Austin, our mission is to empower everyone to reach their full movement potential by transforming pain points into strength, ease, and resilience.

Thirty Three Years, One Studio at a Time

Wendy and Michael charted the highpoints themselves, from the sawdust on the front porch to the car that came through the studio office. Open any leg of the journey below.

1991
Wendy and Michael relocate from Estes Park, Colorado to Austin, sight unseen, on the strength of assurances that this wasn't just Texas. This was Austin.
1993
Wendy earns her certification with Romana Kryzanowska at The Pilates Center of Boulder.
1993
The Pilates Center of Austin is born in the family room of Michael and Wendy's home on Zennia Street in North Central Austin.
1994
Michael promises to build Wendy the equipment she needs. Romana, one of Joe Pilates' principal protégés, welcomes him in and gives him the specs on Joe's original apparatus.
1994
Wendy and Michael join about 100 other Pilates teachers in a class action suit disputing Pilates as a trademarked method.
1995
Word gets out about Michael's equipment. He reluctantly agrees to build for a few of Wendy's colleagues. Then a few more. Then more. Sawdust rains on the front porch and all through the house until it is very clearly time to move.
1995
The Dynamic Fitness Systems manufacturing facility opens in East Austin.
1996
Michael designs a full line of convertible Pilates equipment: the Total Workout System, the Cadillac Convertible, the Wunda/HighChair, and the InStep Barrel System. The combined Reformer and Half Cadillac concept is never patented. Every major Pilates equipment company builds a version of it today, and it is now the standard in studios worldwide.
1996
Wendy takes on her first apprentice in training.
1997
Launch of the 3CoreConnections Pilates Teacher Training Program.
1998
The Dynamic Fitness Systems facility catches fire and burns to the ground.
1999
Within a month, what is left of DFS (basically Michael) merges with Progressive Body Systems in Boulder, and Peak Pilates is born.
2000
We win the class action suit. The Pilates name is set free.
2000
Wendy is asked to join the original Role Delineation Committee, working with Castle Worldwide to develop the PMA exam for teacher certification.
2000
Meanwhile, the home studio overflows the family room and keeps going:
  • into the kitchen
  • then the living room
  • shortly after, the dining room
  • then the guest room
  • and finally the front porch
We love our home studio. But it is time to move.
2000
We move, after six months building a drop dead gorgeous studio on Guadalupe. Then, in the middle of our month long grand opening, a car crashes through the studio office and leaves it looking like a war zone. Shortly after that, the first of two floods submerges the entire studio. Then a swarm of locusts gets into the grand room. Yes, really. Flood number two arrives the following year.
2001
Michael designs the first iteration of the Peak Pilates System, modeled on his Total Workout System, and travels with Wendy and the design team to China to oversee the prototype build.
2002
The flooding turns out to be a defective sewerage system in the building, undisclosed when we signed the lease. The matter is resolved in mediation in our favor.
2002
We finally get it. Drop dead gorgeous studio, feng shui hell. It is really time to move again.
2002
We find our home sweet home in an adjacent north central Austin neighborhood. Not our former half million dollar facility, but a million dollar heart. And no car crashes, floods, or locusts.
2003
Wendy is one of the first workshop presenters at the PMA National Conference, with "Mapping the Body: A Journey to the Core of Pilates."
2003
We are bursting at the seams, with three certification classes running at any one time. We renovate the adjacent suite.
2006
A milestone: the tenth anniversary of the teacher training program. Faced with an industry trend toward much quicker certification, and wanting to travel and teach more continuing education, we decide with bittersweet sadness to retire the program after certifying close to 100 graduates.
2007
Wendy completes her Structural Integration certification. Time to add a practitioner's room.
2008
Wendy and Michael accompany PCA client and track and field athlete Sanya Richards to Beijing for the Summer Olympics. Sanya wins a gold and a bronze.
2008
PCA launches the Community Partners Giving Back Fund, donating a percentage of sales to local, national and global partners who share our vision of a world where everyone has access to the resources to build a vibrant, healthy life.
2009
The PCA turns Sweet 16. We throw a blowout party at the iconic Zilker Clubhouse. March comes in like a lion that evening, but the cold winds are no match for our spirits. We partied like it was 2009.
2010
With the certification program retired, Wendy travels and teaches more and more, so we downsize a bit and let go of one of our mat rooms.
2010
Wendy is invited to be a Second Generation Mentor in Balanced Body's "Passing the Torch" mentoring program.
2011
Wendy's 3CoreConnections teaching perspective draws more and more attention, and the traveling picks up: England, France, Canada, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, New Zealand, Japan, and cities all around the U.S.
2012
The extreme makeover team gears up one more time. A year and a half later the PCA has a brand new interactive website and a fully renovated studio.
2013
Wendy and Michael turn 64 and can hear Paul, John and George crooning softly, "Will you still…" They feel the love, and look forward to the next decade.
2013
PCA CoreStaff begin contributing to our continuing education programs, developing and leading in house workshops for clients and teachers.
2013
The Pilates Center of Austin turns 20 years young, fit and flexible. Time for another party. Zilker Clubhouse, here we come again.
2013 & 2014
PCA brings New Zealand osteopath and acupuncturist Phillip Beach to the U.S., helping set up ground breaking human movement patterning workshops in California, North Carolina and Austin, with movement and bodywork practitioners from around the world.

Robert, our studio manager, retires after 12 years.

2016
We create our advanced "Going Deeper" continuing education program for graduates of the yearlong "Passing the Torch" mentoring program.

When Wendy's schedule no longer permits her annual trip to Japan, a busload of her students turn the tables, cross the ocean and a couple of continents, and continue their studies with her at the PCA.
2016
Wendy and Michael move to Asheville, North Carolina, to be closer to nature and four seasons.
2017
Marcos, in his seventh year as Senior Teacher, takes on the new position of Co Director of Operations.

2017
Wendy's Asheville cottage studio is renovated and christened with an advanced "Going Deeper" mentoring workshop and a weekend workshop co-taught with Mary Bowen.
2017

2020
Our tenth year of mentoring practitioners in the yearlong "Passing the Torch" program, with over 50 graduates.
2020
Marcos is awarded 25 percent stock ownership in the PCA, in recognition of his tenure as Senior Teacher, his loyalty, his tireless dedication and his leadership.
2020
Three weeks after the commemoration of his advancement to junior partner, the landscape and financial viability of the Center is thrown into the rough seas of COVID.
2020 to 2021
Two years of all hands on deck. With two forgiveness loans and the herculean efforts of our staff under Marcos's untiring leadership, we weather the storm and get on track to rebuild stronger than ever.
2022
At the onset of the PCA's thirtieth year, Wendy and Michael pass full ownership to Marcos, along with the fullness of their blessings. They can think of no one more fitting or deserving to carry the PCA's mission forward.
2022
Wendy and Michael are honored to continue mentoring Marcos and the PCA staff as they chart the Center's course over the next 30 years. Wendy continues to offer continuing education and mentoring through the PCA.
2022 to 2026
With the addition of two Senior Teachers, Erik and Laura, along with an amazing staff, the Pilates Center of Austin continues to serve the Austin community through Pilates, Gyrotonic, and now MyoFascial Release.
Today
We look forward to continuing in the spirit of empowering our clients and staff that Michael and Wendy began over 30 years ago.

There are nowhere near enough words to express our gratitude for the journey we have taken with the PCA over the last three decades: the thousands of clients and students who have inspired and taught us so much, all the remarkable teachers who have joined our staff over the years, our partners and colleagues, and our awesome Austin community, that was our home for 25 years. We thank you all for the great and precious privilege it has been to share our lives, dreams and visions together.

Each one of you beats in the heart of the Pilates Center of Austin.

With deep love and respect,
Wendy & Michael

"The road goes on forever, and the party never ends."

The Next Thirty Years

In 2022, at the start of the PCA's thirtieth year, Wendy and Michael passed full ownership to Marcos Apodaca, who had been teaching here for eighteen years by then and had carried the studio through COVID as Co Director. Wendy still mentors teachers and offers continuing education through the Center.

Today, with Senior Teachers Erik and Laura and a staff that shows up for this work every day, the PCA serves the Austin community through Pilates, Gyrotonic, and MyoFascial Release. Meet the teachers who carry it forward.
